Can Resmetirom Cure Nash MASH or Fatty Liver?

We’ve all been wondering: Can Resmetirom cure Nash Mash or Fatty Liver? I know the language changed and have written about that here. But what patients want to know is if it really works to reduce fat? The answer is YES and it’s a miracle for many who have been diagnosed. I’ve loaded this blog with information about the dosage, how to get it, cost, video, and the website. The FDA just gave approval and liver patients are pretty excited.

Resmetirom pronounced Res met er rawm is labeled as Rezdiffra pronounced Rez Diff Ruh. It was approved by the FDA last week and it is totally changing the way we look at the future with a diagnosis of Mash. Let’s peek closer at how it works in our body.

We know that the liver can get clogged up when too much fat is in the blood stream. It becomes inflamed and overwhelmed. A fussy liver can be inherited, or it can be caused by a disease, virus, or lifestyle choices. In this case, if you have been diagnosed with fatty or MASH, it could mean that you are in the early stages of liver disease.

Cirrhosis Can Be Reversed

After being inflamed for a while, the liver will try to heal itself by creating new bands of tissue. However, the new bands of tissue can quickly scar up your liver. That creates a big hot mess leading to cirrhosis. With other types of liver disease, we have seen cirrhosis reverse. It will be amazing to see when and how long it takes with Rezdiffra.

If you’ve been here before, you know that my cirrhosis stuck me at End Stage Liver Disease for a few years before leading to cancer. Having to live so carefully on low sodium and fighting all the symptoms of liver disease like swelling ascites, yellow jaundice eyes and skin, plus the burden of it all is scary. Now there is hope for those who are living with Nash/Mash or fatty liver, and it’s in the form of a daily pill.

Can Resmetirom Cure Nash MASH or Fatty Liver?

How does it work? By starting with the root of the accumulation of fat in the liver, Rezdiffra imitates a hormone that is produced in the thyroid. Then it works to reduce fat in your liver. So it seems the thyroid produces hormones for a variety of body functions. This little pill targets only the fat being accumulated in the liver.

You will need a prescription from your medical provider. They will keep an eye on your liver enzymes and other blood labs while you’re taking it.

Dosage will be pills that are taken daily. Your medical provider will give you the dosage information. Now, you can see if your doctor offers to get help with paying for it. You can also go directly to Madrigal pharmaceutical company’s website here.

Your Liver’s #1 Fan

Many patients and patient advocacy groups have kept their eye on the trials for a few years. I served as a creative consultant for Madrigal. Last fall, while attending The Liver Meeting in Boston, I got to view their patient video series. You’re going to LOVE this. I also got to meet the lady who played the part of Olivia. She was so sweet and very happy to be a part of the education for Rezdiffra. Click here to watch the video.

Let me know what you think? I’d love to have a conversation about it. I remember about 13 years ago, the FDA approved a new med for Hepatitis C and I got cured THAT year. This new pill is the future for those who are ready to be cured of Mash liver disease.

  1. Unfortunately for me I was told I am not a candidate for this medication because I have fatty liver and portal hypertension…

    1. I thought this medication was for fatty liver disease patients? Are you taking medications for the portal hypertension? Have you had any recent varicose bleedout? To me, that would mean that you need the help even more quickly.
Sorry to be so late in responding. My site has had a problem and I’m not logging in as much. It is being fixed today.
You have obviously been watching for this new med and I’m hopeful that it can help you!
      Keep me posted!

New Liver Language 2023: MASH and MAFLD

The global liver community chose new terms or nomenclature for the various types of liver diseases. The new terms are more accurate and also less stigmatizing for the patient. Although it will take time to work them into every area of the medical community, here is a copy for people who have liver disease to start with. There is no more NASH, it will be MASH, NAFLD becomes MASLD, MetALD is a new term, and SLD is the overarching term for steatosis.
