I’m just like you. Part of my days recently have been spent researching, reading online, and jumping into any webinar or group that I can. It’s especially important for me to understand how transplant and other immune suppressed be cured of Covid-19. My sweet husband has helped me. We’re a little obsessed. Finally, after gathering several stories, I wanted to share what I’ve learned
Other Immune Suppression from Hepatitis C
Even though I had cleared the Hepatitis C Virus, my body was pretty ravaged with liver disease. Into the classroom, I used sterile wipes and sprays to wipe down the door knobs and pencil sharpener frequently. Since I touched a ton of textbooks, that meant washing my hands more. I became a pro at staying sanitized pre-transplant.
One Case: There has been one person in the U.S. who messaged me that they had a thick head cold and fever. They got shaky and cold one minute, and hot and sweaty the next. This was early March, when it seemed that most of the cases were in Europe or China. Their big fear was that their hepatologist dismissed them after they cleared Hepatitis C with anti-virals. The primary care doctor shrugged off their symptoms as the regular flu. This person attended a local outdoor social event and think they may have caught Covid there.
Since this person who is Hep C free is not high risk, they did not test, but isolated at home.
Many in their area have since been diagnosed, and some are hospitalized. It seems that they are doing fine in spite of having cleared Hep C, and having the new virus. This person has a lingering cough, and has probably built immunity to the Coronavirus. Again, so much is not known.
Hepatitis C was finally mentioned in a Harvard Precaution (scroll all the way to the bottom of this page) for those who are immune supressed. Thank Randy Madera for that one!
One Transplant Immune Suppressed Has Cured of Covid-19
Transplant recipients like me take prograf, steroids, and Cell Cept to prevent us from rejecting our donated organ. It could be a lung, heart, kidney, or liver transplant. It doesn’t matter, all of our immunosuppressant drugs put our fighter cells to sleep. I call it napping.
A Heart Transplant Doctor: I follow Alin Gragossian on Instagram. She is posting some great things on her IG account called a ” a change of heart ” and also her site listed below. I am posting links she shared about transplant recipients who have been CURED of COVID-19. Scroll down for those Medical Records of Transplant Recipients Medical Records.
I’ve also been part of an online webinar with Global Liver Advocacy. Some transplant doctors are removing or reducing patients from immune suppression, until they are cured. They are also using anti-virals, and other drugs with great success.
Not a lot is sure, but there are survivors, and doctors are learning what works. You can trust your transplant team to do what it takes to help save your life. They’ve done it before and can do it again if you get the coronavirus.
Read About This Transplant recipient cured of Covid-19
Kidney Transplant Cured Covid-19: Perhaps the greatest story is Mark Jorgensen who was aboard the Princess Cruise. Google him or look for him on facebook. He is a kidney recipient and successfully navigated it all with nary a problem. He’s done a lot of fb live videos during his time in quarantine and I believe he just tested negative and will be going home soon. He’s a super star transplant who’s immune suppressed and cured from Covid-19.
This is all giving me and other transplant recipients who are on immune rejection drugs a big sigh of relief.
The bottom line is this: Don’t make any assumptions without talking to your medical provider. Follow social distancing protocol and take good care of yourself. Do your best to eat well and stay physically active at home.
Most of all, be at peace and use whatever mental health care practices are best for you. I’ll keep posting morning meditations for you to listen to and regular stretch, chair and regular yoga classes on my facebook page. I modify for injuries such as sciatic and lower back and would love you to join me on facebook at ihelpc Karen. I’ll be chatting online and here as I learn more and look forward to your connection and comments.
With much love and feeling closer to my readers than ever before. Be Blessed. Love and Prayers and Hugs, Karen

Thank you Karen for your post it is good to know that transplant recipients can survive the Covid – 19.
I had my liver transplant in Oct. 1989 and have gone thru a few colds, but, I am being exceptionally careful not to acquire the Covid – 19.

Hello!
First! Congratulations of living 31 years with a liver transplant! You’re amazing and it truly inspires me to hear that.
Now, I’m with you and am betting on being able to survive without getting it. It makes me feel better to know that some transplant recipients have lived through it.
It feels good to connect on here. We’re a pretty small and tight community. Nice to connect on here!
All my Best, Be Safe,
Karen
I had Bile Duct Cancer in 2013 , Liver Transplant on 12/30/2013, Ruptured Hepatic Artery to Liver on 3/18/2016 with plugged off artery afterwards, (2) Biliary drains for (4) years and just got my second Liver Transplant 2/12/2020! I wear my N95 mask at the grocery store and wipe the cart down! I am 57 years old and my mother is really on me about being out of the house! I am wondering if I should stay away from the store? I am here in SLC, UT!
You’ve overcome so very much. What a champion you are! I’m super envious that you got the N95 mask. I’m wishing I had the foresight to order one. I’m glad you’re wearing it at the grocer and when you go out. Wiping down the cart is good. It sounds like you’re doing great. We all have to figure out how we will handle this.
I personally haven’t gone inside a store in over 2 weeks. Hubby says no. I’m letting my husband bring all the groceries home. Then he puts his clothes in the washer and jumps into the shower while I wipe down the boxes and/or cartons.
Do you think I’m overdoing it? We’ve had about a dozen cases within 5 miles of here and a death, so he changed grocery stores this week.
I see a large variety of ways people are coping with this. One liver recipient drives through and gets dinner with no fear.
May I ask if you have anyone who can shop for you? If not, you sound like you’re well covered. I think fear is hard on our immune system too.
Thanks for reaching out and again, congrats on your successful surgeries.
Karen
Thank you, information I’ve been waiting for!
You’re welcome. While it’s not a final answer, the information was the best I could gather to reassure myself, and all of our friends here.
This seemed to be positive news, in my opinion. My heart and mind are resting easier.
All my Best to You,
xoxo Karen
