What Happens to Your Liver When: Find out here

Your liver is one of the most important organs in your body. When mine got sick, I made some changes . It is the largest organ and can weigh over 3 pounds in adults. After my diagnosis with Hepatitis C, I was surprised to find out how much it was responsible for. This may sound silly, but I didn’t even know what all it did to keep me alive. I promise, when your liver fails, it is hurry up and learn time. It’s no joke how serious liver disease. What happens to your liver when: Find out here.

What Happens to Your Liver When: Find Out Here

When you eat – It begins working the second you start chewing. It takes over and acts like a warehouse storing food. It breaks everything down including sugar and protein. Then it hangs onto it or stores it until your body gives it a signal. If you eat too much fatty foods, it tries to store it. An overload can lead to diabetes if your sugar gets all out of whack. It can also be stored up and is a leading cause of obesity. Sometimes fatty liver disease is genetic, but watching your fat intake can go a long way in preventing and treating liver disease no matter what the cause is.

When you are sick – If you have a virus like Hepatitis C. (that was me, but it’s gone now) it can kill you. Hep C lives in your liver and keeps it all hot and inflamed and sad. It tries to heal, but a sick liver is…. Sick. It sends out collagen bands to heal itself and ends up cutting off blood supply. It all becomes a big scar tissue mess and your liver gets hard.

When you drink – Your liver feels like it is being poisoned when you pour alcohol into your system. Just like it numbs your brain out, it will eventually numb your liver out. If you have any type of liver disease, also known as cirrhosis, it sends every message it can to tell you to stop it. You will get super drunk faster if you have Hepatitis, NASH, or PBC. Just don’t do it.

When you take drugs – Taking drugs of any kind has an effect on your liver. If you have liver disease, only use the type and amount that your doctor says is safe. Something as simple as acetaminophen can take you out if you have liver disease. If you are on a prescription medication, your medical provider will help you out. Some drugs, like the Hepatitis C treatment, can provide relief for long term liver disease. Once the virus is gone, your liver will begin to heal.

When you give it a break – Your liver is constantly trying to heal. If you give it a break from drinking, drugs, alcohol, fatty foods, and sugar it will calm down. Getting rid of the Hepatitis C Virus gave me a few extra years. I was dying in 2010, but through the proper diet and medications, I made it through treatment.
